The next in our previews of Unhallowed Necropolis, Revised comes directly from one of the creators, New Dark Age‘s Jason Soles:
Over the past couple years, we here at New Dark Age have been working hard to revise and update our vision of the Neo-Victorian world. In addition to reworking and expanding the setting material and playable content, the project has also given us time to go back and flesh out different aspects of the world visually. As the art director for Unhallowed Necropolis that meant I got to work closely with some truly amazing photographers and illustrators to make this world come to life. Necropolis is the supernormal sourcebook for Unhallowed Metropolis, covering the ghosts and psychics of the Neo-Victorian world. It gives a glimpse of the psychical asylums, spectral eliminators, exorcists, industrial mediums, secret cults, government plots, and spirits that populate the London of 2105. Floating Man: While I always though the illustrations and photos in the book were strong and evocative, there was so much more I wanted to see. While many older pieces, like the cover and Robert Tritthardt’s Floating Man were reprised from the first book, I also had the opportunity to commission new works.
Cover & Sculpture: The cover by sculptor and photographer George Higham envisions the escape of a ghost contained in a enclosed environment suit, essentially an aethertech device for both restraining the dead and to give them a form suitable for interacting with the physical world. George sculpted and cast the life-sized helmet for the suit especially for the cover. Admittedly … In the conversation in which we worked out the look for the cover we both fondly referenced old episodes of Scooby Doo…
Exorcist: The first thing I did when I new I had to start looking for new work was to look around for inspiration. I dug deeply into the ghost photography of the Victorian era, watched a grip of atmospheric horror movies, and commenced a seemingly exhaustive perusal of Spiritualist texts. Thus prepared, I started meeting with artists and photographers. Brian Snoddy (check out his art here) immediately got what I was looking for and nailed my vision of a steampunk exorcist.
Ghost: On the photography side, our intrepid models, photographers, and make up artists made their way out to a decommissioned military base to shoot amongst the ruins. Among my favorite photos from that shoot was Seth Taylor’s atmosphere-soaked shot of model, Moriah Weber. After capturing his image, Seth went back in and made it all the more terrifying with some subtle manipulation. For me it captures the aesthetic of the old ghost photography in a wholly original and alien way. Those vague lines capture something of unknowable and inhuman menace… The implication of rending claws doesn’t hurt either.
Alienist: New in Unhallowed Necropolis Revised is the Alienist calling. The new accompanying illustration was drawn by Chris Walton. I asked Chris for Anton LaVey and I think he was spot on.
Thanks for letting me show off some amazing art!
